Korowai o nga Uara:Cloak of Values

Korowai o nga Uara : Our Cloak of Values

Our Values underpin our school culture and philosophy and are deeply held beliefs about what is important and desirable.  They are expressed through the way we think and act.  Every decision relating to curriculum and all interactions at school are reflective of the values of the individual and collective.  Our values refer to what we want our learners to know about, show and demonstrate in their learning and relationships.

At Ōpiki School, we nurture our Values so our learners grow into inquiring thinkers who can adapt and succeed in a changing global society.

Our Korowai o Nga Uara;

Ako:We Learn - We value learning from each other and that learning is interactive and connected to the world around us.

Whanaungatanga:We Connect - We value developing and maintaining strong relationships with all people to create a sense of belonging and unity.

Manaakitanga:We Care - We value showing kindness and care for everyone, in a safe and culturally responsive environment.

Kaitiakitanga:We Protect - We value being guardians, protectors, kaitiaki of our environment, our language, our culture and everything that makes us special.  Now and for the future.

Our values are based on the metaphor of the korowai, which is regarded as a taonga, a treasure handed down from the generation to generation.  The korowai has a parallel with our metaphor of the harakeke bush in our curriculum,  that is it the end product of the values, skills, attitudes and mahi of all our learners.

The whenu of the korowai descends from the Ministry of Education’s Key Competencies, representing the learning skills of the ako.  Nga aho of the korowai weaves trough the whenu, weaving the korowai together as a wearable garment and depicts our kaupapa/tikanga.

Enrolment Zone

Ōpiki School has an Enrolment Scheme.  Any students who live within the Home Zone have automatic entry to Ōpiki School.  Please fill in the In Zone Enrolment Application form found in the Links tab of this website.  An email will be sent to the Principal when you submit the form.

If you live outside the Home Zone and you would like to apply for enrolment in the next intake to attend our school, please fill out the Out of Zone Application form in the Links tab of this websiteAn email will be sent to the Principal when you submit the form.

Starting School: 'Bridge to School'

Please come to the school and enroll your child as soon as you can before they turn five, or use the appropriate Enrolment Form under the Links tab on this website. On, or before, their first day please provide the office with the necessary documentation, e.g.  birth certificate, immunization forms, proof of residential address, visa

We will organise dates to begin the Bridge to School programme 6 weeks before your child starts school.   Please make sure you attend with your child on the initial visits.  During this time your child will get a chance to meet other children in their class and participate in activities and routines.

Just before your child starts school your child will then have two independent visits.

We can be flexible and personalise your child’s transition if in consultation with the teacher, your child may need more time.

Bus Services

At Ōpiki School, we run two bus services to pick up and drop off students before and after school.

The Ministry of Education bus is a free of charge bus that is run for the students who live within the Transport Entitlement Zone (TEZ), which differs from the school Enrolment Zone.  Refer to the Map to see if you live within the Ministry TEZ and qualify to use this service.

We also provide a user pays bus for those who live outside the Ministry TEZ.

It is essential that these times and stops are adhered to for the safety of our children as well as the efficient running of the buses.  Please refer to our Bus Policy which sets out our wishes to provide a school bus service that operates efficiently and ensures the safety of all passengers, staff, students, parents and caregivers.  To view the policy, please go to the Board of Trustees tab on the homepage of this website.
